The Queen’s Square Bladder Stimulator is a hand-held, battery operated (2x AA Alkaline) vibrating device used to initiate urination and maintain bladder emptying in people who are unable to fully empty the bladder.
It is easy to use and can reduce reliance and complications related to self-catheterisation in those with neurogenic bladder symptoms (including hyper-reflexia and urine retention). It is commonly used in MS (Multiple Sclerosis).
It is placed on the lower tummy above the pubic bone before commencing urination. It is activated by applying pressure against the skin, or via an on/off button if you are unable to exert sufficient pressure to start the stimulator.
The device vibrates at 60Hz to stimulate the bladder muscle (detrusor) to contract and assist in bladder emptying. The stimulator should be kept vibrating whilst urine is being passed, and for 1-2 minutes after the urine stream has finished.
